Researching & Planning: (U7: P4, M3 & D1)

ARTICLE NO LESS 400 WORDS

P4:

News Genre and Topic:

Many news platforms produce articled based on sport like printed, digital and social media news, the one I've chosen is from ESPN, 'FIFPRO on women's ACL tears: Fix pitch, shrink calendar'. The news genre I've chosen to write about is the increasing ACL crisis within Women's football its a news article of sports coverage and concerns of the health and protection of players. Within Women's football there have been increasingly more cases which are growing  and women being more susceptible to the injury and the injury also being reoccurring causing players to retire early. It has been proven that compared to men, women are more likely to gain this serious injury. This topic is an important as audiences need to understand the severity of the injury in the women's sports game as it causes changes to teams and changes the winners are cups and tournaments.

How Does My Article Meet News Values:

My news articles meet multiple values, they highlight what makes a news story high value and whether certain articles are worth reading. Some important articles are written on multiple platforms, both traditional and digital on online and printed newspapers as well as on social media accounts for example Instagram and Facebook. One value I will be using within the article is personalisation, and this article will be personal to me because as a football player I know how severe these injuries are and how far they can set a player back and affect them mentally, physically and emotionally and therefore I will have first hand information and knowledge of the effects. Another value I will be using is methodological and meaningful this is due to the fact that most of the article will be research and facts based as this helps to raise awareness to the topic as well as this it will include the medical terms of the injury and how the injury is caused.

Plans for Primary Research;

The plans for the primary research for the chosen article will be interview and survey. The interview is a great way to not only gain personal insights but also build a report and a relationship with the interviewee which will allow them to feel safe and trusted during the interview. Since the interview will be in person I will be able to access emotions and thoughts based on the topic and off of a personal experience. This primary research example has close links to citizen journalism. Another way I will be getting primary research is through surveys, although I know who I sent the questionnaires to the replies are anonymous which means people will answer truthfully. The questions will be closed as this will help me to have an understanding with easy to understand answers. I will be conducting the research on people in the local area and people of younger audience therefore helping educating the younger audiences on the severity of the injury.

Proposed interviewee
I am going to be interviewing one of my friends Sophia Godfrey she is a footballer who's tragically got an ACL injury I decided to interview her as I knew I could get a deeper understanding and more information on the injury and how it effects people emotionally and physically.

Methods You Intend to Use Your Primary Research in Your Article:
I will be using quotes from my primary research of my interview with a football player who has teared her ACL, these quotes will make my article more real and make the audience sympathise with the article and feel bad for the player. I will also use the questionnaire to show the lack of awareness of ACL injuries and this will help me to understand how much I need to explain the injury within my article.

How Will You Record This Information:
I am recording this interview through a voice recording this will be done through my phone on voice memos I will be asking the football player questions and she will be answering them, by recording the interview on my voice memos I will then screen record the interview and upload it to YouTube and as a result it can be easily distributed so people can listen to it. I will also use google docs to share the questionnaire this will include questions about ACL injuries and the knowledge people have on it, the questionnaire is anonymous and therefore allows people to speak truthfully and I will able able to gather valid results and I will share the link to people so they an answer it.

Plan for Secondary Research:

On the other hand, the plans for the secondary research will include a range of articles across a range of digital platforms this will allow me to collect data from different sources and different writers across the world which allows me to access different views, facts and opinions on the topic which I can reference within my own work. For example, I will be using digital articles from ESPN which is an American article as well as Guardian which is an English article to get two different views and facts from different countries. As well as this I will also be using Arsenals 5 part documentary videos to see long formed content of what players such as famous players like Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema's recovery from ACL injuries and can access more secondary data on the thoughts around the injury. Lastly, I will also be looking at social media pages form both news accounts and other public accounts of famous players, social media pages have a chat function where comments can be written and shared so it will be helpful to see people thoughts and feelings on the topic.

Moral Panic:

My article could create panic due to the topic as the media normally phrase the injury as a crisis and a threat to the women's games which could cause panic and fear to female athletes as they don't want to risk the injury. They also frame the injury to blame that women's bodies are unfit for professional sports and rates panic about the safety of the future of the game itself. The use of High profile players such as Leah Williamson and Beth Mead in the article shows the intense severity even famous player get it and displays the injury as an epidemic that threatens the next generation.

Reliability:
The primary research that I conducted for my journalism article is very reliable as I was able to access a wide range of results from a wide range of people and as a result was able to get a result that is conclusive from people from a wide range of backgrounds and is inclusive. Thought the use of the interview I was able to get raw reliable information which is very personal to the interviewee and as a result I am able to gain a more emotional article piece. The questionnaire that I created also allowed to gain anonymous and truthful data which gave me reliable answers. For the secondary research, all the information is digital such as social media posts, documentary and articles all this give information as well as images regarding the fact about ACL injuries and also give real behind the scenes personal opinions.

Relevance:

The primary research for my article, I was able to gain very relevant information which is in relation to my target audience. I conducted interview with Somone who is 18 years old who has unfortunately got an ACL injury and is in recovery this is perfectly relevant for my article as she is in my age range and also give personal extra information to me which I can then use within my article. This also allows my article to include raw emotion and real life experience so people can understand the real pain of the injury. I also conducted research through questionnaire this is relevant to my article as the answers are anonymous and therefore I can see how much people actually know about ACL injuries and how I can spread awareness. The secondary research I was able to gather information which is extremely relevant in relation to the sport of women's football and reaching my target audience. The Arsenal documentary is extremely relevant as it shows the raw reality of the injury and how it effects even the most elite athletes and what they have to go through which is extremely exhausting physically and mentally which I can use in my article.

Accuracy:

The primary research I conducted was very accurate, the interviews I conducted were accurate as it was first hand interview by me and I was directly in front of the person who was telling me about their first hand experience and giving their opinions on the awareness of ACL injuries. The interviews were able to help me gain trust and build a good relationship with the interviewees which helped give deeper more emotional answers and for the questionnaires I was able to gain truthful questions as it is anonymous. Also the questionnaire is very convenient as it only takes a couple of minutes to complete and the data was quick and easy to collect. The secondary research I have collected is very accurate as I took all the information from official accounts such as She's a Baller and Arsenal official accounts as these are verified they can be trusted. I also took the documentary from the Arsenal official website and as a result the videos are factual and raw and come straight from the source of the players. The articles from The Guardian and ESPN are also accurate as they are trusted and well known newspapers.

Validity:

The primary research I collected was very valid, this is because of my questionnaire as I created a 10 questions for a range of people to fill in and answer this allowed me to gain anonymous data which allowed me to get truthful answers which gave valid data. The secondary research I conducted was also very valid, the videos and articles I found were from trusted accounts and as a result all the information and data I gained from the secondary research was valid. Not only this but also the documentary on the Arsenal website are a first hand account of the behind the scenes of the ACL injury which showed raw emotion and provides validity.

Accessibility:

The primary research I completed was very accessible, for example the interview I conducted was with an 18 year old and therefore reaches the target audience set by my client New Angle of ages 16-25 year olds. The interview provided me with a large amount of raw information and opinions of a first hand experience of ACL injuries and as a result was very accessible. The questionnaires was also accessible as it also targeted the age range of 16-25 and welcomed people of different races, ages, genders and ethnicities and therefore everyone was included and perfectly engaged the target audience. I will also ensure my article is written in shorter paragraphs in order to not bore the target audience and ensure they are engaged with the content. The secondary research I completed was very accessible due to it all being online this means I was able to use a screen such as a laptop to access all the secondary research, the digital articles were easy to access as all I needed to do was search on a search engine about ACL injuries in order to find articles. For the social media posts, I was able to download the social media apps and as a result be able to have easy access to Instagram and Facebook and it was very straight forward to find posts about the injuries. The documentary has very easy access as it was on official website and is free and easy access to watch on all devices.

Quality:

The primary research I conducted are very good quality this is because I completed them on a digital platform and as a result allows people to to have time to create and decide their answers about their opinions on ACL injuries and as well as that allows the interview to be recored digitally so I can listen back and remember key details of the interview and the interviewees personal experience. My interview is very good quality this is because it lasted over 3 minutes and as a result this means my interviewee was allowed to expand on her personal experiences and she was able to expand on her experiences and awareness of the topic. The questionnaires were also very good quality as I gave them to trusted people and therefore I knew the answers they would give would be truthful and therefore give me high quality results.  The secondary research I found was also very good quality, the digital articles had accounts already and already recorded and also the newspapers were very well known and are very good quality sources of information. The documentary I collected was from the official arsenal website and therefore is very good quality as it came from an official website. The social media I found also is very good quality as  the accounts very verified and therefore had good quality information.

Cost Effective:

The primary research I completed for my article was very cost effective, the interview I conducted was free of charge meaning I didn't play my interviewee and also I used a free app on my phone called voice memos and was already downloadable on my phone. The questionnaire I conducted was also free as I created it using Google Docs which is free and easy to collect results. My article will also be free as it will be published online and the public will have easy access to it. Both the interviews and questionnaires were free of charge and free to distribute online via the internet. The secondary research I collected was also free to get and is cost effective, for example The Guardian and ESPN are free to access newspapers and already published so it was easy for me to access and gain the information. The social media is also free as you can make accounts for free and gain easy access to the content online. Lastly, the arsenal documentary is free to access via making an account on the website and therefore I had easy access to the videos to gain data.
